Our 2018 Historical Fiction month features The House Girl by Tara Conklin. The American South plays a large role in our selection, so we're pairing it with an old southern whiskey based cocktail: The Mint Julep. 

MINT JULEP

1 serving

INGREDIENTS

3-5 mint leaves

1 sugar cube 

2 oz Makers Mark Whiskey

3 splashes of peach bitters

Crushed ice

Mint for garnish

PREPARATION

Place the sugar cube and mint in a cocktail shaker. Crush the cube onto the mint and muddle the mint. Add the Makers Mark and swirl. Add the crushed ice, cap and shake. Shake again (it's fun). Fill a glass or cup with crushed ice. Pour in the bourbon and top with water and peach bitters. Garnish with mint.

PROTIPS:

  • Don't have a muddler? Use a wooden spoon.
  • No sugar cubes? Make or purchase simple syrup and add 1 oz to each glass.
  • If you're feeling extra summery, make Mint Julep snow cones.
